IRCC: Immigration Services Online Preferable to Flagpoling
Flagpoling – work permit, study permit and visitor extensions. Accessing these immigration services online avoids the risks associated with flagpoling.
We know more than most how complex Canadian immigration is. However, recent changes are making the process more accessible than ever. One such significant development is the recent expansion of immigration services online at Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
Why Immigration Services Online Over Flagpoling
While flagpoling remains a viable option, for some we recommend using IRCC’s immigration services online. Here’s why:
- Less Risk: Depending on your circumstances, flagpoling can lead to you being held at a port of entry, found inadmissible, and your passport being seized by an officer. That risk can be avoided entirely by applying online;
- Plan Ahead: Online services allow you to manage your application timeline effectively, reducing the need for last-minute border trips.
- Convenience: Handling your immigration needs online means avoiding the travel and logistical challenges associated with visiting a port of entry.
Immigration application processing can be long and complicated. The promise of on-the-spot processing flagpoling is hard to resist. However, flagpoling is not for everyone and is not without risk.
We want to keep you informed. We also want to help you and take advantage of the latest tools and services designed to simplify your immigration journey. Let’s dive into how the recent changes can benefit you and why choosing immigration services online might be your best move.
Flagpoling
Flagpoling is a practice where temporary residents leave Canada and re-enter within 24 hours to process immigration services at the border. While this method is still available, it does have drawbacks, including a potential inadmissibility finding, long wait times and limited service hours.
We have had clients who have retained us to represent them after being found inadmissible while attempting to flagpole. Some of our clients were held for many hours at the port of entry, interviewed by both a CBSA officer and then a Minister’s Delegate, had their passports seized, and ultimately they were issued a removal order. These risks could have been avoided, for the most part, had these flagpole applicants applied online instead.
Currently, flagpoling services are available only during specific times at designated ports of entry. For example, services at the Peace Bridge in Fort Erie are only offered from Tuesday to Thursday, between 8 am and midnight. Another example, the Niagara Falls Rainbow Bridge, follows the same schedule. Such restrictions highlight the importance of taking advantage of more convenient online services.
