Canada Ends Fast-Track Student Permits: SDS & NSE Programs Terminated November 2024
Canada Terminates Fast-Track Study Permit Programs
Major Changes To The International Student Application Process
Canada has discontinued two significant international student application streams effective November 8, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. ET. The Student Direct Stream (SDS) and Nigeria Student Express (NSE) programs have been terminated as part of Canada’s commitment to ensuring equal access to study permit applications.
Historical Context
The Student Direct Stream, launched in 2018, provided expedited processing for eligible post-secondary students from multiple countries including:
- Antigua and Barbuda
- Brazil
- China
- Colombia
- Costa Rica
- India
- Morocco
- Pakistan
- Peru
- Philippines
- Senegal
- St. Vincent and the Grenadines
- Trinidad and Tobago
- Vietnam
New Application Process
Key Changes
- All international students must now apply through the regular study permit stream
- Guaranteed Investment Certificates will be accepted as proof of financial support
- Standard study permit requirements apply to all applicants regardless of country of origin
Transition Guidelines
Applications submitted before the November 8 deadline will be processed under their original streams (SDS or NSE). Any applications submitted after 2:00 p.m. ET on November 8, 2024, will automatically be processed through the regular study permit stream.
Impact on Prospective Students
This change aims to strengthen program integrity and ensure a positive academic experience for all international students. The modification will not negatively affect eligibility for students from countries previously under the SDS or NSE programs, as all applicants must meet Canada’s standard study permit requirements.
