Express Entry - Apply for Permanent Residence

Express Entry is Canada’s online system to invite and manage Permanent Resident applications from skilled workers from around the world.  It is also one of the fastest ways to apply for Canadian Permanent Residence.

Express Entry manages applications for three economic immigration programs:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program
  • Canadian Experience Class

Provinces and territories can also recruit candidates from the Express Entry pool through the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) to meet local labour market needs.

How Express Entry Works

Collect your documents

Two of the documents you will need to start are English and/or French language test results and in some cases an Education Credential Assessment if you completed your studies outside of Canada to show that you’re eligible for Express Entry.

Submit your profile

You will have to populate your Express Entry profile online with information required by Immigration Canada and then submit it online.

If you’re eligible, we’ll accept you into our pool of candidates.

Once your Express Entry profile has been submitted, Immigration Canada will rank and award you points. Your score will be based on the information in your profile.

Express Entry Pool Draw

Approximately every 2 weeks the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration draws profiles from the Express Entry profile pool based on the minimum number of points that he decides before the draw that a profile must have.  If your profile has that minimum number or points or more, then it will be drawn by the Minister.

Invitation to Apply

If your profile is drawn by the Minister, then you will be sent an electronic Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence.  You will then have a fixed number of days to submit your application for permanent residence online to Immigration Canada.

Processing your application

Immigration Canada will process most complete applications that have all the supporting documents in 6 months or less.
